ABOLITION OF PRESCRIPTION CHARGES IN NORTHERN IRELAND FROM 1 APRIL 2010

The abolition of prescription charges in NI took effect from 1 April 2010.

The NI Health Minister, Mr M McGimpsey announced on 29 September 2008
there would be a phased abolition of prescription charges in Northern Ireland.
 
Charges for each prescription were reduced from £6.85 to £3 from 1 January 2009
with prescription prepayment certificates reduced to £9 for 4 months
and £25 for 12 months.
 
From 1 April 2010 no charge for Health Service prescriptions,
wigs and fabric supports.

Sick note to be replaced by 'Fit Note'
Following on from the consultation Reforming the Medical Statement - Consultation on Draft Regulations, the Social Security (Medical Evidence) and Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 were made 1 March 2010 and will come into operation from 6 April 2010.  
 
and are numbered S.R. 2010 No. 55. New guidance has been published to give GPs the facts about the first overhaul to the sick note in 60 years.
 
The Department for Social Development, backed by the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), is advising doctors and healthcare professionals to log on to: www.nidirect.gov.uk/fitnote to find out more.
 
The ‘fit note’ or form Med 3 replaces the traditional ‘sick note’ on 6 April, 2010.
